It Should Be about Who Has the Right to Vote

By Rob Tenery, MD on January 18, 2016

To bring any measure of control to the immigration problems that are affecting virtually all aspects of this country’s social and economic systems, a form of personal identification (Voter ID or E-Verify) for all residents is essential. Its primary purpose would be to insure that those who have the right to vote can, and those that don’t, can’t. It could also be used as identification to participate in any of the federal entitlement programs.

The formal opposition has mostly been by the ACLU that has filed protests in states that have personal identification requirements in place.* However, the real 'Donkey' in the room is the Democratic Party. Their stated concerns to protect minorities from discrimination are not as laudatory, as they might seem. Closer to the truth is their desire to expand their voter base, since it is widely known that these affected populations vote liberal, at least, 70% of the time. In reality, the continuing opposition, by those who hope to benefit politically, perpetuate the influx of illegal immigrants as well as serves as a fertile ground for gangs, voter fraud and terrorism.

Even though it may be more difficult for certain populations to meet the personal identification requirements, a system can be created that is affordable and accessible to the vast majority of all eligible residents. Mexico dealt with their election violations by instituting a free Voter ID card issued by their Federal Electoral Institute.** If it works in Mexico, there is no reason that it could not work here!

For those who claim that personal identification systems discriminate against the minorities and the elderly, the opposite may be true. Those added beneficiaries will further drain the limited resources of the entitlement programs for those who really need them. Examples are the banking problems with the massive entitlements in Greece and the growing concerns with our own Social Security program.

Immigrants built this country, but immigrants can also take it away, if the current problems continue unchecked. Although many naturalized immigrants hold on to their cultures and religions, most assimilate into what has been called the ‘melting pot' of America. Many illegal immigrants don't assimilate, for fear of being caught. Instead, they linger in the shadows, resorting to cheap manual labor for their subsistence, and far too often, a life of crime and dependency.

The Bill of Rights and the Constitution guarantee our citizens life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but also, opportunity and determination--- not just self-determination, but national determination--- the right to vote. Illegal immigrants deserve protections, but they don't have the right to participate in the process of national determination.

Even though illegal immigrants make contributions to this country and most abide by the law, they are still committing a crime by being here. Although, they shouldn't vote, many do. Random samplings of voter registration rolls over a two-year period that were called for jury duty in a U.S. district court in Florida discovered that 3 percent were not citizens. This is just one example of many throughout the country.

Granting amnesty outright, or a ‘touchback program’, for the illegal immigrants that are already established in this country seems to be the most humane and practical solution, rather than deportation. However, to become legal, an individual would have to register to be included in a federal identification system. A permanent Green Card or some type of personal identification would be issued, but that would not allow them to vote.

To become a participant in determining America’s dream, they would have to get in line with others who are waiting patiently to come here legally. With the potential voting pool now identified, the Democratic Party might not be as contented to maintain the status quo!

 * Texas’ 2011 voter ID law  was ruled  by the 5th Circuit Court  to be in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act .  The case will be returned to the court for further testimony that would require proof of discrimination against minority interests.
