It's One Big Shell Game to Them

By Rob Tenery, MD on October 4, 2018

Even though the Democrats don’t have a majority in either branch of Congress or the White House, they seem to be able to control much of what goes on in the nation’s capitol. They achieve this by two methods--- block voting and slander.

Currently, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives gives them some breathing room on critical votes. Not so in the Senate, where their majority is by a hairline margin. We saw the effect of the Democrats’ voting in unison when Senator John McCain’s no vote on the Republicans’ proposed legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare sent it down in defeat.

The other method the current Democratic Party increasingly resorts to is slander. As the facts slowly come to light, this last presidential campaign and Trumps’ first two years in office, clearly demonstrate how his opposition has disparaged and maligned virtually every aspect of his life. From the unsubstantiated Steele Dossier to the latest The New York Times expose charging him and his family with fraudulent tax dodging schemes since he was three years of age.

Those who can’t accept that he won the election have hounded Trump constantly. Whether any of the numerous allegations will finally take him down, may depend on the results of the upcoming midterm elections.

With a conservative appointment, Trump is only one Supreme Court justice away from keeping the court out of the hands of the Democrats for at least a generation. Fearing an overturn of Roe v. Wade and supporting more legislating from the bench, the Democrats are desperate to block any Trump nomination, and they don’t care how it is done.

With the Kavanaugh nomination, the Democrats have finally outdone themselves. Not able to criticize his judicial competence, except for a fear that the abortion issue might be in jeopardy, they have put together an all out effort of character assassination, smearing him with charges of sexual misconduct, rape, drunkenness and assault. Except for drinking beer, the other allegations have not been corroborated.

We may never learn the truth about the Democrats’ allegations of Kavanaugh”s sexual abuse. The FBI’s investigation ended up with the same  ‘he said, she said’ conclusion. Whether Judge Kavanaugh wins the appointment to the Supreme Court or not, it is obvious this is all one ‘big shell game’ by the Democratic opposition.

The answer as to why the Democrats raised their last-minute concerns may be found in the internal memos that were recovered from the Democratic files. These memoranda demonstrate a concerted effort by the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee to malign and destroy the reputations and careers by innuendo and unsubstantiated allegations of any Republican Presidental nominee who is not of their persuasion.

This shell game was launched on January 30, 2003 in the office of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschel. Present were Assistant Harry Reid and six Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats. With all pledged to secrecy, the fateful decision was made to filibuster President Gorge W. Bush’s nomination of (Miguel) Estrada to the District Court.

“It is a part of a grand design to talk to death a succession of conservative judges selected by President W. Bush. Democrats were intent on keeping the Senate from voting on any appellate nominations that did not meet their Party’s specifications. One Judiciary Committee member there was Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. He proposed a plan to prevent President Bush from putting his ideological stamp on the federal bench by using the filibuster to keep his judicial nominee off the bench.” *

At the 2003 meeting in Daschel’s office, the eight senators agreed to filibuster the Estrada nomination and not discuss his merits or demerits as a nominee for the District of Columbia appeals court. The objections to Estrada were political and procedural. His confirmation would set a precedent that appellate nominees need not answer detailed questions that could make it hard to stop them as possible future Supreme Court nominees.

The effects of these Democratic Senators’ efforts are clearly demonstrated by the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings conducted on Judges Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas and now Brett Kavanaugh. Not so with President Obama’s nominees to the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, who received support from 9 Republican Senators, while and Elena Kagan received support from 5.

Sean Hannity aptly named these organized Democrat operatives as the ‘Party of Slander’. So caught up in gaining power, it seems they will stop at nothing.

We frequently hear that politics is a ‘dirty business’. To Judge Kavanaugh’s wife and his two daughters, it’s worse than that. It’s heartbreaking!
